THERAPY IN NEW YORK

Frequently Asked Questions

  •  I provide individual and couples therapy to adults (18+) who are located in New York and Oregon. If you're seeking support in either of these states, I'm here to help.

For wellness coaching, training, and consulting, I work with clients worldwide. So, no matter where you are, if you're looking for guidance in these areas, please reach out.

  • My practice is entirely virtual, offering convenient and accessible therapy from the comfort of your own space.

  • The first step is to schedule a free 20-minute phone consultation. This gives us a chance to connect, discuss what's bringing you to therapy or coaching, explore your goals, and answer any questions you might have. It also helps us both determine if we're a good fit to work together.

To schedule your free consultation, please email me directly at: dr.peihancheng@gmail.com or fill out my contact form.

During our call, we can also discuss potential next steps and scheduling your first full appointment. If, for any reason, I'm not the best fit for your needs, I'm happy to provide you with referrals to other trusted colleagues.

  • My approach to therapy centers on creating a deeply supportive space where you can feel truly heard and understood, both as an individual and as someone shaped by unique intersecting identities and cultural experiences.

In our sessions, you can expect to explore thinking, emotional, and relational patterns that may no longer serve you. While understanding the roots of these patterns is important, we will also focus on developing practical tools and concrete steps to create positive and lasting change in your life.

What sets my work apart is my commitment to helping you center on your inherent strengths and growth, often drawing upon ancestral wisdom and healing practices that may already exist within your family and cultural background. I also bring a nuanced understanding to the complexities of your relationships.

My style is both direct and compassionate, and together, we will work to identify what's holding you back and develop actionable steps to build a more fulfilling and authentic life. My training is rooted in an integrative approach that aligns with my belief in the power of connection and understanding.

Emotionally Focused Therapy helps us explore the core emotional needs in your relationships to foster deeper bonds and security. Attachment-based therapy emphasizes how early life experiences shape your current relationship patterns and helps build a secure sense of self and connection. Finally, Dialectical Behavior Therapy offers practical skills for managing intense emotions, improving relationships, and increasing mindfulness, providing you with tangible tools for navigating life's challenges. My commitment is to provide you with the support and tools you need to enhance your overall well-being and create a more balanced and satisfying life.

  • Most of my therapy clients find that meeting weekly for either 45 or 60 minutes works best. This allows us to build momentum and consistently address your goals.

Some people prefer a shorter-term focus, perhaps 3 to 6 months, to work through a specific issue. Others find ongoing therapy helpful for exploring deeper concerns or having a supportive space to navigate life's challenges as they arise. Think of our sessions as a regular opportunity to strengthen your mental well-being and build new ways of coping.

Ultimately, the frequency and duration of our sessions will be a collaborative decision, based on your individual needs and preferences.

  • Absolutely! As Mandarin is my native language, you're welcome to use it in our sessions. Many clients find that speaking Mandarin allows them to express the nuances of their emotions and experiences more fully, and I want you to feel as comfortable as possible.

  • I am an out-of-network provider, which means I am not directly contracted with any insurance panels. My standard fees are $325 for a 45-minute individual therapy session and $425 for a 60-minute couples therapy session.

If your insurance plan has “out of network benefits,” you may be eligible for partial or full reimbursement.  Please contact your insurance provider directly to understand your specific mental health coverage.

Here are some helpful questions to ask your insurance company:

    • Do I have out-of-network benefits for mental health services?

    • What is my annual deductible for out-of-network mental health care, and have I met it yet?

    • What percentage of the therapist's fee is covered after my deductible is met? Is this based on the actual fee I pay, or a "usual, reasonable, and customary" (URC) rate set by the insurance company? Use the Clinical Procedure Terminology (CPT) code: 90834 for individual therapy, and 90847 for couples therapy

    • Is there a limit to the number of therapy sessions covered per year?

    • Do I need a referral from my primary care physician to access out-of-network mental health benefits?

For clients utilizing their out-of-network benefits, I will provide you with a detailed monthly statement (often called a "superbill") that you can easily submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement.

  • A Good Faith Estimate is a written estimate of the total expected cost for your therapy services if you are not using insurance or are paying out-of-pocket. Under federal law, healthcare providers need to give clients who fit this criteria an estimate of the bill for medical items and services, including therapy. This estimate includes the cost of your sessions and any other related fees we might anticipate. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling services or at any point upon request. If the final bill is significantly higher than the Good Faith Estimate (at least $400 more), you have the right to dispute the bill. Please save a copy of your estimate.
